Google announced on Snapchat today that Android N,
the latest version of Android, will now go by Android Nougat. The announcement
comes after the company said at I/O last month that users could submit
suggestions for the name online. Android Nougat (likely Android 7.0) the next major
version of Android following 6.x Marshmallow and will see the introduction of
features such as split-screen multi-window support, direct-reply notifications
and bundled notifications, plus improvements to the Doze feature (which extends
battery life) and changes to the way Java is used and implemented, including
support for Java 8.
Under-the-hood improvements such as support for the
Vulkan gaming APIs should make Nougat devices even faster for gaming.
Meanwhile, Android's 2016 release will introduce Google's VR platform,
Daydream, on certified handsets
